UK forestry work is usually limited by the ground, not the timber. Steep faces, wet or soft sites, windblow and stands with no access road stop a conventional harvester or forwarder long before its output matters. The machinery that works there falls into a few families: walking excavators and tethered harvesters for felling on slopes, harvester heads matched to the carrier, cable yarders where the ground is too steep to drive, forwarders, skidders and winches for extraction, and mulchers, scarifiers and guarding for clearance, replanting and protection.
