Tunnelling machinery is chosen by the cross-section first. Headings, cross-passages, escalator shafts and small-diameter drives leave little room to work, and every diesel engine adds to the ventilation load. The core machine types are compact tunnel excavators in diesel and fully electric versions, tunnel hammers for breaking at the face, heading and loading buckets for mucking out, shotcrete manipulators for sprayed concrete lining, and quick-coupler systems that let one excavator change tools from the cab.
Exc@v8 supplies Wimmer’s Badger tunnel excavators, tools and couplers alongside Menzi Muck walking excavators and dumpers, and supports UK tunnelling contractors from drill-and-blast through to sprayed concrete lining with a 24-hour service programme.
